Are there really "Manly" or "Girly" instruments?
It just doesn’t seem that long ago that girls played instruments like flutes, clarinets, saxophones and French horns and boys played trumpet, trombone, baritone, or tuba. Boys would shun a “girly” instrument and vice versa. Those days faded quickly with the women’s movement (remember Gloria Steinem) and the advent of equality with Title IX and girls sports teams in our schools. No pre-conceived notions now. It’s not uncommon to see petite girls playing large instruments and large boys playing a piccolo. To one who grew up in “girls instruments” and “boys instruments” era these still seem a bit odd. But parents (and grandparents)…just encourage the youngster’s choices of musical instruments because they are their own generation and they definitely know what they want!
