Where to rent a Beginner Student Saxophone
Beginning band typically starts in 5th grade nationwide. The core instruments in most middle school bands are: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet and Trombone. It is not uncommon for band directors to start their students on a clarinet for a year before some of the students switch to the saxophone. Out of the basic four or five beginning band instruments, parents often quickly notice that the saxophone is the most expensive. The saxophone also happens to be one of the most popular in demand instruments in our American culture. Some point to the fact that President Bill Clinton often showed his passion for playing the saxophone, as part of the reason for the saxophone’s popularity.
Let’s say you’re a parent of a 5th or 6th grader who wants to play saxophone. Before you go out and make a decision and buy the first saxophone you see, make sure that the Band Director has also indicated that the student will be playing saxophone. Next, make sure you get the right saxophone. For beginning band, the Alto Saxophone is the usual choice. It’s a bit smaller than its cousin, the Tenor Saxophone. It’s lighter, the mouthpieces and reeds are smaller, and in beginning bands it’s far more common. The Tenor saxophone plays a half octave lower that the alto saxophone. The pitch of the tenor saxophone is also lower.
While many parents may have previously played an instrument such as a saxophone, make sure you get your saxophone checked out for possible repairs before taking it straight into the band room after years in a closet. Likewise, if you are looking at a pawn shop model, remember, many of these are “As is” so buyer beware! Finally, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting a band director approved saxophone.
